"I spent several hours working on an important document using Microsoft Word document application; and while the process my Windows machine terminated improperly, I restarted the system to check whether my Word document was intact. I was able to find the document, however it didn’t have the Word file symbol. I tried opening the file, but an error message popped up saying that the file was not a valid Win32 Application. I used manual ways to open the DOCX file but the results were not fruitful. Now I’m stuck in this situation and I am looking for a way to overcome the problem.
This kind of mishap often happens, when the association between the file and the corresponding application is missing. Every file in a computer has its own associations with the corresponding application. For example: A docx / doc file is associated to open with its default Microsoft Word application and a ZIP file is associated to open with WinZip utility etc. Hence, association files are very important and any problem to this file will result in severe file corruption and damage. And once your Word document file is damaged, you won’t be able to access the file anymore.
Apart from association missing, there are numerous other reasons due to which a Word document gets corrupt some of the common ones include DOCX header file corruption, macro virus infection on your Microsoft Word file, round tripping, transfer error, power failure while saving Word file, incomplete download, MS Word application malfunction, hardware error and so on.
To repair corrupt / damaged Word document associations, open Microsoft Word application and go to “File” and then click on “Open”. Now search and navigate to your DOCX file, single click on it. Then instead of clicking on “Open”, just click on the tiny arrow next to the Open tab and choose “Open and Repair” option.
This is one of the easiest ways to fix minor corrupt DOCX file associations; however the only problem is that this method is not always successful. Hence, in such circumstances make use of advanced repair utilities such as Remo Repair.
