You have an excel workbook inside Word Document and getting an error while trying to open this embedded Excel sheet. The common errors which appear while trying to open embedded Excel sheet are-
“Microsoft Word can’t start the application required to open this project. An error occurred and this feature is no longer functioning properly. Would you like to repair this feature now?”
“The program used to create this object is Excel. The program is either not installed on your computer or it is not responding. To edit this object, install Excel or ensure that any dialog boxes in Excel are closed”
“The server application, source file, or item cannot be found. Make sure the application is properly installed, and that it has not been deleted, moved, renamed, or blocked by policy.”
Here I have listed out some simple fixes to solve this error.
Before trying these methods, make sure that it is not an issue of Word File corruption. To ensure that, create a new Word and Excel file. Then, insert Excel file in newly created Word file. And try to open embedded Excel. If it doesn’t work, then it is not an issue of file corruption. If Excel sheet opens without any problem in newly created Word file, then Word file which is showing error might be corrupted. In that case, make use of Remo Repair Word tool and fix Word file that is showing error. The tool can also be used to repair damaged 2013 Word document and Word file created using any other version of Word, such as 2010, 2007, 2016, etc.
Word file is not corrupted, but you are failing to open Excel sheet embedded in Word file, then follow the below fixes-
Fix #1- Open Word in Safe Mode
Try to open Word file in safe mode, to do that-
- Open Run window by pressing Windows + R key
- Then, enter Winword.exe /safe and hit Ok button
It opens Word application in safe mode. Now, try to open embedded Excel sheet. If you still get an error, then try out next fix.
Fix #2: Disable Add-ins
- Open Excel or Word, then navigate to File-> Options- > Add-ins
- From the bottom of the window, hit Go button next to COM Add-ins
- Deselect all the add-ins
- Reopen your Word file and try to open Excel workbook
In case, you failed to open embedded Excel sheet even after disabling Add-ins, then go for next method.
Fix #3: Take Help of Outlook
- Open your Word file which has Excel workbook
- Copy the Excel workbook and go to Outlook
- Open new email window and paste copied Excel Worksheet
- And, now double click on Excel sheet. When it shows you “Some objects contain viruses that can be harmful to your computer. It is important to be certain that this object is the trustworthy source. Do you trust this embedded object?” message. Hit Yes button.
- Now, copy and paste it back to your original Word file
- Close Word file and reopen it
