You just upgraded from Outlook 2007 to Outlook 2010 on your IMAP account. Unfortunately, there is no deleted items folder after the upgrade. • Click Inbox folder on your IMAP account.
• Now click on Folders -> IMAP Folders.
• A popup window appears. Press Query
• From the list of folders, select Deleted Items folder and click Subscribe.

2. Create Deleted Items folder manually

• On your IMAP account, click on File. Now select Account Settings.
• In your Account Settings dialog box, double-click on IMAP account.
• In Change Account dialog box, click on More Settings.
• Now click on Deleted Items
• Now select New Folder
• In Create Folder window, enter the name of the folder as Deleted Items and click OK.
• Now select Move Deleted Items to the following folder on the server
• Select Deleted Items folder and click OK.

3. Assign the right Deleted Items folder

Once you have created the Deleted Items folder manually, it is time to assign it.

• Click on File -> Account Settings.
• In Account Settings window, double-click on your IMAP account under Email tab.
• A Change Account window opens up. Click More Settings.
• Under Internet E-mail Settings dialog box, click Deleted Items
• Now, select Deleted Items folder to store all your deleted items.
• Click on OK.

5. Copy the key value path
6. Paste the path in File Explorer and hit Enter to go to the folder
7. Delete all contents in the folder

Now restart Outlook and check if the attachments can be opened normally. If you are still having trouble, your Outlook data file could be corrupted and needs repair.

Solution 2: Repair Outlook data file (PST)

Outlook stores all data in the form of a PST file on your computer. If this file is corrupt, chances are Outlook may not work normally and you may encounter problems.

To fix corruption in PST, there is a built-in tool called Scanpst provided by Microsoft. It is usually installed with Outlook and already available in your system.

Just look for Scanpst.exe in the Search bar and double click on the tool to open it. Then locate your PST file by going to Outlook > File > Account Settings > Account Settings. Select Data files tab and choose your file. If you click on Open File location, you should be able to find the location.

Then click on Browse to select your PST file and click Repair. Scanpst will repair your file.

However, with Scanpst, only minor corruptions can be repaired. Also, you may have to run the tool several times to fix the issue.

Solution 3: Use Remo Repair Outlook (PST)

There may be issues with some of your Outlook folders not showing up. As a result, you will not be able to see the emails, contacts within those folders.

In this article, we provide potential solutions to resolve the issue. First of all, try restarting Outlook to see if your folders are visible. If they are, great! If not, proceed with the following solutions to troubleshoot the issue.

Solution 1: Subscribe to folders

Some folders may not show up if you haven’t subscribed to them. In order to subscribe to folders, do the following.

1. In the Mail menu, right click on the top folder
2. Choose IMAP folders > Query
3. Choose the folder/s and click on Subscribe

If after subscribing to folders, the issue isn’t resolved, proceed to the next step.

Solution 2: Update folder list

If the folder is created using a web browser, you may not be able to view them in ‘IMAP folder’ list (described above). In this case, you may need to update the folders. To do this,

1. Click on Mail, right click on the top folder
2. Click Update Folder List

Now you should be able to see all the folders in IMAP folder section. Then click Subscribe to see all the folders on your Outlook page.

If these steps don’t help, proceed to the next step.

Solution 3: Download Mfcmapi

This tool is known as Microsoft Exchange Server MAPI Editor. Making a small change in settings within the tool will help resolve the issue.

1. Download Mfcmapi and run the tool
2. Click on Session menu and select Login > Display Store Table
3. Then choose an Outlook profile
4. Double click on the email associated with the mailbox

• If you are using Cached mode, Expand Root – Mailbox > Expand IPM_SUBTREE
• If you are using online mode, Expand Root Container > Expand Top of Information Store

5. Then identify the folder missing from Outlook and check if the PR_ATTR_HIDDEN value is TRUE.
6. If it is, right click on it and choose Edit Property
7. Deselect Boolean and click Ok

Now restart Outlook and see if all the folders are visible in Outlook. If none of these solutions work, try recreating your Outlook profile and check if it helps.

Solution1: Increase the server timeout settings

To work around the problem, try setting the server timeout to say 2 minutes or 3 minutes. This way enough time is provided to send large attachments. To do this, follow the step by step instructions below.

1. Open Outlook and go to File > Info > Account Settings
2. Select your email account and click Change
3. Once the Change Account dialogue box opens, click on More Settings
4. Change the value corresponding to Server Timeouts to your requirement, say 2 or 3 minutes.

Now check if emails can be sent without issues. If the issue persists, proceed to solution 2 and repair your Outlook.

Solution 2: Repair Outlook

Repairing Outlook may help solve the issue in some cases. So, go ahead and try to repair Outlook by following the steps below.

1. Right click on Start and select Apps and Features
2. Select Outlook
3. In ‘How would you like to repair Office Programs’, select Online Repair and click Repair.
4. If you are using MSI, select ‘Change your installation’ > Repair

This will repair your Outlook and fix any issues. Now you should be able to send emails normally. However, if the issue still persists, run the Inbox Repair tool to fix any possible corruption with your Outlook data files.

Solution 3: Run Inbox Repair tool

Inbox repair tool is provided with Outlook to fix corruption in its data files called PST. Any corruption in data files will hamper the regular functioning of Outlook. This may be one of the reasons why you are getting error messages while sending emails.

To run this tool, search for Scanpst.exe in Search in File Explorer. Then you are required to select the PST file to repair.

To find the location of PST file, go to File > Account Settings > Account settings. Then select your PST file and click on Location of the file. Now note the location of your PST file.

Back to Scanpst, select the PST file and click on Repair. Now the tool will repair your file if there are any minor corruptions.

Solution 4: Use Remo Repair Outlook (PST)

If the PST file is severely corrupt, Scanpst cannot repair the file. In that case, you will have to make use of professional PST repair tools such as Remo Repair. This tool is designed to repair your PST file and fix Outlook issues.

2. Select Command Prompt (Administrator)
3. Type in the administrator password to login
4. A black screen now appears. Type ‘sfc /scannow’ at the location of your cursor. (Also note the space after sfc)
5. Hit Enter and the system will begin scanning process

Restart your computer once the scan is complete. Now you should be able to send emails in Outlook again.

In some other cases, corruption in your Outlook data file called PST may also cause issues with sending emails. A PST file is a personal folder file that saves all Outlook data such as emails, notes, contacts, etc. It is important for the functioning of Outlook.

Locate your PST file

• To find the location of PST file, go to Outlook > File > Info
• Then select Account settings > Account settings > Data files
• Here, note the location of your PST file

You may receive this error if you use Microsoft Outlook 2007 and connect to Exchange Server 2013 or Exchange Online mailbox. This is because of a limitation in how these servers set permissions.

A workaround for the problem is to use Outlook on the web to share calendars. Follow the steps to do so,

1. Click on App launcher on the top and select Calendar
2. Click Share and then choose a calendar to share
3. In ‘Send a sharing invitation in email’ section, type the recipient’s email
4. Then select what information you want the recipient to see
5. Finally, select Share

After following these steps, you should be able to resolve the issue and share your calendars.

On a side note, if your Outlook is not behaving normally and there are some inherent issues, it could be your Outlook data file (PST). Corruption in these files causes problems and your Outlook will not respond when sending email. To fix Outlook, these files need repair.

• Select the Mail tab
• Click Empty Auto-Complete list
• Click Yes to confirm and click Ok

If you delete items from a PST file, the file is automatically compacted in the background. Alternatively, you can also compact the file manually by following the steps below.

• Delete any items that you do not want and empty the Deleted Items folder
• Click File > Account Settings > Account Settings
• Go to Data Files tab, click on the .pst file you wish to compact and then click Settings
• Click Advanced tab > Outlook data file settings
• In the Outlook data file settings dialog, click Compact Now and then click Ok

3. Run Scanpst.exe

Outlook is one of the simplest applications out there to not just send and receive emails, but to synchronize your tasks, events, update your schedules, create customized folders and so on.

It is not always smooth sailing for users though. There are times when Outlook shows errors.  One such error is “Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. Cannot open the Outlook window. The set of folders cannot be opened. The operation failed.”

Before we jump into finding solutions to this error, let us look at common causes for this error:

• Incorrect installation/re-installation of Outlook.
• Improper upgradation of Outlook.
• Using a profile created in an older version of Outlook in current Outlook version.
• Corrupted Outlook PST file.

Here are few solutions to “The set of folders cannot be opened” error.

(I) Create a new Outlook profile

• Click on Windows. In the search window, type Control Panel. Open Control Panel.
• Open Mail section by going to User Accounts -> Mail.
• Now click on Show Profiles.
• Select your current profile and click on Remove.
• In Mail Profiles window, add a new profile by clicking on Add Enter the name of your new Outlook profile. Click Ok to save changes.
• Now select Auto Account Setup or Manual Setup and follow the on-screen instructions.
• (II) Start Outlook in Safe mode

• Press Windows+R. In the search window, enter Outlook/safe. Press Enter or click O
• You can select the profile that you want to log in. If it works fine in Safe mode, the likely issue could be that of Add-ins.
• To disable Add-ins, go to File ->Options -> Add-ins -> COM Add-ins -> Manage ->Go.
• Uncheck all the Add-ins and click Ok.
• Check if Outlook is back to normalcy.
• (III) Reset Navigation Pane

• Press Windows+R.
• In the Run dialog window, type exe/resetnavpane. Press Enter or click Ok.
• Now reopen Outlook.
• (IV)Use scanpst.exe

Use this method if your .ost file is corrupted.

• Open your computer explorer and type exe in the search window.
• Once you find it, double-click on it.
• After it opens, click on Browse.
• Now select your corrupted .ost or .pst file. OST file can be found at C:\Users\your_username\My Documents\Outlook Files. PST file can be found at C:\Users\your_username\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook. Use any of them to repair.
• After you selected the file, click on Start to begin scanning.
• After the completion of the scan, you will be asked if you want to repair the file. Click on Repair. Note that you have to run the repair process a few times to get rid of all the errors.
• (V) Use Cached Exchange Mode

This works only for Microsoft Exchange users.

• Type Control Panel in Windows search bar. Go to Control Panel and type Mail.
• Now click on Mail icon in search results. In Mail Setup window, click on Data Files. Select your Account and click Settings.
• In Advanced, check all three boxes for Use cached exchange mode, Download shared folders and Download public folder favorites. Close the window. Open Outlook and test again.
