Many users encounter problems while configuring iCloud in Outlook on their new systems. They seem to have problems when they check for emails, contacts or calendars and receive an error message that reads as follows
‘Setup cannot continue because Outlook isn’t configured to have a default profile. Check your Outlook settings and try again.’
In order to resolve this problem, we’ll provide some solutions in this blog. Try them one by one and you should be able to get back your emails, contacts and all data in Outlook.
Solution 1: Make sure ‘Always use this profile’ is selected in Outlook
- In the taskbar, type Control Panel and open it
- Then type Mail in the Control Panel search and double click on it
- Select Show Profiles
- Under the section ‘When starting Microsoft Outlook, use this profile’, select the ‘Always Use this Profile’ option
If you use multiple profiles, you can choose one as a default profile. To do so, in the Choose Profile dialogue box, click the profile you want to make default from the Profile Name list.
Solution 2: Reinstall both Outlook and iCloud
As the next workaround, you can try reinstalling both Outlook and iCloud applications. Reinstalling these applications is known to resolve the error in many cases.
Solution 3: Use an older version of iCloud
There are complaints about synchronization problems with newer versions of iCloud. To eliminate this as a reason for the error, try installing an earlier version of iCloud such as 5.2.1. This is also known to help resolve the Outlook set up error.
Solution 4: Use PowerShell commands to remove the Store version of Office
Having a Store version of Office is known to cause the error ‘Setup cannot continue because Outlook isn’t configured to have a default profile’ error. To resolve this, you will need to download the Click-To-Run installation available on Office.com.
Ideally, installing a Click-To-Run Office should remove the previously installed Store version, however, in order to ensure that it is removed, we will need to run the following PowerShell commands.
- Type PowerShell in the taskbar search
- Click Run as Administrator and enter the admin password
- Then enter the following command and hit Enter
- Next, enter the following command and hit Enter
- Close PowerShell and open it without using running as administrator
- Next, run iCloud in compatibility mode using the instructions below.
- Go to ‘iCloud.exe’ and right click on it to select Properties
- Go to Compatibility tab and check the box ‘Run This program in compatibility mode’ and try syncing Outlook and iCloud
We hope one of these solutions explained in this blog helps you fix the Outlook setup error. These issues are of course errors that occur rarely and are only specific to iCloud syncing with Outlook. But there are also more common errors such as trouble sending emails or Outlook not opening. These errors are often a result of corruption in Outlook data file called PST.
And by repairing the corrupt PST file using Remo Repair PST, all your Outlook errors will be repaired.
